This is an 1,800 square foot clubhouse for Mission College Apartments in Norfolk, Virginia. The object was to provide Norfolk Redevelopment & Housing Authority with a slick contemporary building for the residents to use as a clubhouse beside the swimming pool. Materials include thick brick bearing walls, stained concrete floors and aluminum storefront window/door systems.

Riverfront House in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Jim and Leslie spear-headed the design of this Palm Springs modern style home with Cox, Kliewer & Company. This house was not built however, as the owner found another waterfront lot on which to built a fine tuned version of this house.

This 8,000 square foot residence was designed for a waterfront lot near the Cavalier Yacht Club in Virginia Beach. Located on an one and half acre lot, this two-story house includes a private master suite, private office, a guest suite, media room, exercise room, wine cellar, spacious two story living room, and a 6-car garage outfitted with hydraulic lifts. Balconies and a shaded roof garden provide spectacular views of the water.

Addition to an Eastern Shore Residence

Located on Scarboroughs Neck Road in Belle Haven, Virginia, this was an extensive renovation and addition to an existing 1,780 square foot single-family residence. The new addition added 2,680 square feet to the house. The ground level included an additional two-car garage and an elevator. The upper level addition included a generously sized great room, a master suite, a large screened porch and front and back decks. The third floor provided enough space for two additional bedrooms and a shared bath.

Henrico Arms Apartments Renovations

Located in Henrico Couty, Virginia, this tax credit rehab consisted of 39 buildings.

Each building received new windows, exterior siding and new roofing.

Renovations to the 232 apartments included completely replacing kitchens and bathrooms as well as upgrading the interior finishes.

The apartments remained occupied throughout the renovation process.

The project also included site improvements and renovations to the community building and laundry building.

Full services were provided from the planning phase through the construction administration phase.

East Beach Cottages

In association with Cox, Kliewer & Company Architects, Jim and Leslie were in charge of the design and construction documents for these seven cottages located in the East Beach development in Norfolk, Virginia.

These cottages were designed for and built by J.M. Sykes Construction beginning in 2003.

Each cottage is three stories and measures approximately 1,300 square feet including a one-car garage.

Designed along Maiden Park in the center of East Beach, these cottages were designed with other successful historic communities in mind such as Charleston, Savannah, Edenton and Annapolis.

Built with quality and efficiency in mind, all of the cottages overlook the park by means of large windows and open balconies.

Located one block from the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay, these cottages reflect the character and spirit of the East Beach community.

Located in the John Hancock Tower in Boston, Massachusetts, Hill | Holliday is part of the world's third largest advertising conglomerate.

Hill Holliday is a full service marketing and communications agency and has won every major award for advertising excellence.

Jim worked with Cathy Christ to design this monumental stair connecting two departments within the firm.

Mixing sheets of bent steel plate to sheath the curved wall, similarly unpainted exposed steel for the stair structure and stainless steel and glass railing materials, this stair gives the firm the cutting edge look it provides in it's own advertising.

First Congregational Church of Battle Creek

First Congregational Church of Battle Creek

Jim spent two years working on The First Congregational Church at Battle Creek while working as a staff architect and project manager at Centerbrook Architects. Working closely with Jeff Riley and Charles Mueller, Jim brought this project through the construction documents and then proceeded to manage the construction through its completion.

This project was a major renovation of an early-twentieth century domed church and its 1940s, 50s, and 60s additions. It is a downtown church but serves a congregation that largely arrives by car. In addition to solving numerous functional problems, the design addressed two major liturgical concerns: a sense of welcome outside and a sense of community within.

Four, new, canopied entrances reach out on each side of the building to draw people in from existing or newly expanded parking lots. The four entrances each lead to paths inside that converge at a centrally located, circular reception desk and lounge. The building now actively invites people to enter and provides a person to welcome them immediately within their view.

A pre-existing and neglected exterior courtyard, which offered little joy during the winter months, was roofed with glass and made ready for community gatherings and celebrations. A small garden courtyard was maintained to allow the morning sun to fill the sanctuary and to allow the sanctuary's curved wall to be seen from the newly created community gathering space.

The pre-existing arrangement of fixed rows of pews, a chancel positioned as a proscenium stage, and an offending projecting balcony were at odds spatially and liturgically with the round, domed sanctuary. Removing the balcony, reconfiguring the worship space into seating-in-the-round with a combination of fixed and loose seating, mixing the choir in amongst the congregation seating, and providing for a moveable chancel afforded considerable flexibility for varied modes of worship and celebration, and enhanced a sense of communal gathering and singing. Four pieces of liturgical furniture for the chancel were designed to imbue these otherwise inanimate objects with qualities of life.

Renovations to the nursery school celebrated the joy of children with color and honored their scale with classroom doors sized just for them.
